Jego ojciec, Beno\u00eet Chass\u00e9riau, by\u0142 francuskim urz\u0119dnikiem kolonialnym, a matka, Maria Magdalena Couret de la Blagni\u00e8re, pochodzi\u0142a z kreolskiej rodziny.
